THE QUIET ZOO

The Quiet Zoo was created while in residency with StreitLab, a developmental laboratory program from the Streit House Space gallery.

During my residency, I wanted to explore the possibility for a photographic print to become a storied object in itself.

Using prints from my Observatorio series and a variety of substances I collected from locations germane to the original series—crumbled peat from the Antrim Coast of Northern Ireland, river water from under the Hell Gate Bridge in New York, rose petals from Rodin’s garden in Paris—I "cured" the images and aired them in public and private locations in an attempt to explore their alchemical potential to become multi-sensory objects.

My aim was to discover whether the prints themselves could take on a sensibility similar to what was derived from the original Observatorio series, which relied on unexpected encounters in the outdoors using public observation telescopes as the medium.

In doing so, I attempted to examine the limited sensorial encounters we experience on a daily basis and transcend the static process by which we consume visual material.
