I'm a few days into my 3-week residency with StreitLab, a new venture from the wonderful gallery Streit House Space.

My project is part alchemical adventure / part public art installation and at the end of it, Streit House Space will publish my very first zine.  I'm excited!

36 Hours in Nashville with Local Milk

October 12, 2016 Carrie Crow

I went to Nashville last weekend to learn a thing or two about food and prop styling from the inimitable Beth Kirby of Local Milk.  I agree it’s a decadent notion to fly somewhere for a seven hour workshop but..

How Do You Value Art? About The Venice Vending Machine Project

June 6, 2016 Carrie Crow
'Out The Last Closer' accordion book by Carrie Crow & John Greiner

'Out The Last Closer' accordion book by Carrie Crow & John Greiner

I first heard about the Venice Vending Machine project in 2011.  Curator Marina Moreno distributed a call for artists to submit a tiny art piece, no more than 9cm in diameter, which would be enclosed in a plastic sphere and 'exhibited' inside a life-sized vending machine at the 54th Venice Biennale.  I loved the concept and quickly shipped my pieces to the UK where the project was being assembled.

The vending machine installation device interests me because frankly, art fairs (museums and galleries too) can be too serious. Too much head, not enough heart and this project provides a much needed infusion of whimsy into spaces that can sometimes focus on the metrics rather than the delight in experiencing art.

Instagram Guest Posting for Streit House Space

April 26, 2016 Carrie Crow

I'm guest posting for the wonderful Streit House Space this week on Instagram. Follow along here: https://www.instagram.com/streithousespace

*****

Hi everyone! This is @carriecrowphoto posting an experiment for you this week. I’ve been working on my series, ‘Observatorio’ for a couple years, which uses observation deck telescopes as a life-sized filter of sorts. With most of the telescopes left outside to weather the elements, the photos that result are marked by the dirt, water stains, scratches, light leaks, focus issues etc. of the machines. This week, I thought I would take the photos themselves outside for a week and see how nature treats them.‪ I'll report back at the end of my week as to how the prints fared.

New Piece up at ARTEIDOLIA: 'Women Were Photography Pioneers Too'

April 6, 2016 Carrie Crow

"Where are all the great grandmothers of photography and why aren’t they being exhibited alongside their male counterparts?"

Part One of my three-part series on women in photography is up now on Arteidolia. I'll be looking at too-often forgotten women in photography whose work absolutely blows my mind.

Trip Report: The Quest for Fellini's Rome

March 18, 2016 Carrie Crow

“Rome is a very loony city in every respect. One needs but spend an hour or two there to realize that Fellini makes documentaries.” - Fran Lebowitz

Does Fellini's Rome exist anymore?  Are there shadowy piazzas and winding stradas one can get lost in, far out of range of the odious selfie stick?  Not having been to Rome in over ten years, I was on a quest to find out if there was a little ‘la dolce vita' left in the city, if it had ever existed outside of Fellini's imagination at all. So, on a frigid Friday evening in February, the Baron and I set off to find....Fellini's Roma.

Streit House Space Exhibition: 'This is It'

February 6, 2016 Carrie Crow
Photo: Jordanna Kalman, Streit House Space

Photo: Jordanna Kalman, Streit House Space

I have been following the online photography gallery Streit House Space with great interest for awhile and was delighted to be selected for their recent exhibit, 'This is It.'  The gallery is run by Jordanna Kalman, a photographer and curator under the simple premise: "photographers submit their work via email which is then printed, displayed on a wall, documented and finally posted online."

Why is this interesting to me?  Well, firstly, I think Jordanna's personal work is brilliant and I love her gallery's aesthetic and philosophy.  As a photographer who obsesses over every detail, from inception to print production, it's a refreshing experience to let that image go entirely.  Streit House exhibitions are essentially a photograph of a selection of photographs, printed on whatever paper and printer the curator deemed fit and I just love how each of those individual images cohere in a new, dreamlike narrative borne out of Jordanna's imagination.  It's kind of like being in someone else's dream and that is a wonderful feeling.

Trip Report: Ecuador and the Amazon, 10 Best Travel Moments

February 2, 2016 Carrie Crow

Two days ago, the Baron and I were hiking in the Andes at an altitude of 13,400 feet, so high we could feel clouds grazing our cheeks.  A day later, we were back in New York City with snowbanks two feet high, the Iowa caucuses looming and a dead cockroach on our living room floor. Onward we shuffle, however, with profoundly grateful hearts at having experienced even the smallest slice of magical, ethereal Ecuador.  Here are some of our favorite moments.

Obsolescence, the group show I’m in at Curious Matter got a lovely little mention in the New York Times.  Brilliant work by Mikhail Gubin is featured in the piece.  Super excited to have two of my pieces from Observatorio in this exhibition.  It's truly one of the most beautifully curated shows I've ever been in.
